The very scarce first US edition of Indian-born Swiss writer John Knittel's commercially successful first novel, set on the Cornish coast.With the inscription of the author's son, Robert Knittel, to the front free endpaper. Robert was editorial director of publisher William Collins, and the husband of Academy Award winning German born actress Luise Rainer.With a preface from the author's friend, the journalist and writer Robert Hichens, who encouraged Knittel to embark on his English language fiction career. Rebacked, in the publisher's original cloth binding. With boards restored, original back strip laid down, and retaining the original endpapers. Discolouration to back strip and board perimeters. Front hinge lightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound, with title page gathering attached at the head only. Pages lightly age toned, with light tide mark to head of first few leaves. Very Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
