Amsterdam: Arkslee & Merkus. Ex-library, with small stamps on the verso of the title page and first page of text on each volume, else no library markings. Handsome volumes, in original contemporary calf bindings, with ornate gilt trim, raised bands and red labels on spine, marbled endpapers and red edges. Hinges are cracked but boards are still attached; corners are bumped and worn, with leather missing from 2 corners of Volume I. Covers show some soiling, endpapers show some offsetting, textblocks are clean and unmarked, except for library stamps; bindings are sturdy. Tome I: 309 pps. inluding Index. An Advertisement by the Author and Errata Sheet are bound in prior to the text. Contents: Charles V Becomes Emperor, 1519: Spanish Civil Wars 1520-21; War of Navarre 1521; Wars of Charles V and Francois I 1521-1544. Tome II: 391 pps. including Index. Octavos. 451; 490; 487; 473; 388; 540, [1] pages. [LACKS ALL MAPS]. Hardcovers bound in original full leather. The bindings are worn and scuffed and a bit dry. Volume I has been rebacked in leather with the original spine laid down. New endpapers in all of the volumes. Although worn, the set is fairly sound. Headcap of the spine on Volume II is chipped. Text is toned and foxed. The text blocks are sound. The leaf for pages 245-246 in Volume one has a 3 1/2 inch tear running from the fore edge straight into the text. Lacks all of the maps, although it appears they were never bound in (no plate marks or sign of cut pages).
