About This Item

New York: Dodd & Mead, 1871. First Edition . Decorated Cloth. About Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Frontis. New York: Dodd & Mead, 1871. First Edition. Frontispiece illustration. 12mo, 383 pp. Russet pebble cloth ornately decorated in gilt and black, as is the spine; light blue endpaper. Front hinge cracking at flyleaf, some spine lean (perhaps 10%), general mild to moderate wear at extremities, early owner's inscription dated Nov.4th, 1873 on ffep, else a very bright and handsome Very Good, with very strong gilt and black designs. See scans. An uncommon true first edition, with eye appeal on the shelf, of the second installment - "Hunter and Tom" - in Abbott's juvenile adventure series, "The August Stories", the others being "August and Elvie" (first volume); "The Schooner Mary Ann" (third volume); and "In Preparation" (fourth volume). Genuinely scarce as the 1871 first edition, and a truly pretty decorative binding - or, as bibliographers tend to say, "lovely binding". See scans.l50n
