New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1922]. First Edition. First printing, first state, with "Purdy" for "Lyte" in line 4, and "my" for "any" in line 5 on p.49. One of 9,500 copies. Octavo (19.25cm). Navy blue cloth, stamped in orange on spine and front cover; [viii],401,[7]pp; [6]pp ads at rear. Stamped "Sample Copy" on title page. Straight but faded on spine, slightly rubbed at edges, a few tiny spots to textblock edges, front hinge cracked after flyleaf, but generally Very Good. Lacking the dust jacket.

Advance review copy of "Lewis's acidulous, ironic portrait of the American business man...Zenith telephone workers, dairy workers and truck drivers strike against a wage cut. Babbitt recognizes the justice of their demands but hasn't the guts to come out publicly in support of the strikers. Synopsis

Babbitt , by Sinclair Lewis, was first published in 1922. This novel is a satire of American culture.  It critiques society and the socially-acceptable behavior of middle-class American life and its pressure on individuals toward conformity.
