About This Item

NYU Press, 2000-04-30. Paperback. Very Good. 6x2x8. Softcover. Good binding and cover. Shelf wear. Edges creased. Clean, unmarked pages. <br> A monumental work of scholarship, The Balkans Since 1453 stands as one of the great accomplishments of European historiography. Long out of print, Stavrianos' opus both synthesizes the existing literature of Balkan studies since World War I and demonstrates the centrality of the Balkans to both European and world history, a centrality painfully apparent in recent years. At last, the cornerstone book for every student of Balkan history, culture and politics is now available once again.

Synopsis

The Balkans Since 1453 is a book by the Greek-Canadian historian L.S. Stavrianos published in 1958. It is a large, synthetical work which encompasses the major political, economic and cultural events of the Balkans from the fall of the Byzantine Empire to the late 1940s. Stavrianos paid particular attention to the national awakening and the nation-building process in the Balkans. The book was highly acclaimed by many historians of the Balkans, including Traian Stoianovich and Mark Mazower.
