About This Item

New York: Viking Press, 1993. Uncorrected Proof . Trade Paperback. Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. This is an Uncorrected Proof - not quite the same as, but often referred to as an Advance Reading Copy, or ARC - fast becoming an attractive "collectible", as it precedes the First Edition. It is a harrowing debut novel by this gifted African-American writer and Vietnam veteran - the story of 10-year-old Billy, who is arrested, convicted, and executed for murdering a white girl in 1930s Mississippi. French's style has been compared to that of Zora Neale Hurston and Richard Wright. 214 pages. CONDITION: a bright, square, unmarked, uncreased copy with no apparent shelf-wear - now enfolded in a promotional wrap-around (featuring the enthusiastic remarks of John Edgar Wideman) and stored in a clear, protective polypropylene bag.
