Print Description:
The Book of Posters,
by designer Norman LaLiberte 1/ (1936-1921)is an art book about posters that includes illustrations of many Peter Max posters. This art book was accompied by its own promotional poster, designed by Peter Max. His name appears vertically on the lower right edge of the composition. The Peter Max independently printed poster features at its top a large, ringed, hovering planet whose rays or showers descend on what appear to be two "unaltered" mirror images of Manhattan under a bright blue sky. The Peter Max imagery reflects 20th c. pop art and that of other fantasy worlds. The perspective on our earth bound reality is enhanced visual perception.
The poster's composition places its contemporary imagery under the book title's motto "Our creations are in the first place ourselves." attributed to painter, teacher and color theorist Amedee Ozenfant (1886-1966). The sprays of colorful stars and flying figure-filled bands emanating from the ringed planet, penumbral emanations of an entirely different color, are overseen by four primary human figures in profile whose flower power vision and dynamic complexions may place them as residents of the ringed planet, disciples of its creative energy or beneficiaries of the streaming stars, angels and winged figures descending on Manhattan. The winged figures are psychedelic Peter Pans or perhaps Robinhoods.
This Peter Max poster is in institutional collections.2/
