About This Item

Hartford: Thomas Green, 1767. Disbound. Good binding. Small quarto 28 pp. First edition. Removed from volume. Staining to the inner portion of the first five leaves and, less prominent, some toning to the lower inner margin of the last few leaves as well as the verso of the final leaf, otherwise generally clean. An uncommon memorial sermon for the Roger Wolcott who in addition to a distinguished military career culminating in his being placed second in command of New England forces during King George's War, he also had a robust political career from Justice of the Peace to chief justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court to colonial governor. Several pages of the sermon are given over to outlining Wolcott's life from his humble childhood forward. Printed by Thomas Green, the first printing in Hartford who set up his press only a few years before this in 1764. A bold, bordered and strongly inked title page make this a striking imprint. Evans 10736; Trumbull 1240; Sabin 61039; Oxford American National Biography. Thomas, Isaiah. History of Printing in America.
