It first appeared in Reader's Digest (June 1964 issue) and was printed in book form in 1981. It was adapted by Clavell himself into a thirty-minute short film for television which aired on Mobil Showcase. The story takes place in an unnamed school classroom in the United States, in the aftermath of a war between the US and an unnamed country. It is implied that America has been defeated and occupied. The story opens with the previous teacher leaving the classroom, having been removed from her position and replaced with an agent of the foreign power. The new teacher has been trained in propaganda techniques and is responsible for re-educating the children to be supportive of their occupiers." (from Wikipedia) .

Reviews

On Jun 8 2007, BeverleyBills said:
As a James Clavell fan,I have read most of his books.

This one is entirely different.

It is tiny. Under 100 pages

It addresses the rote learning experience in our schools and how easily young minds can be taken over.

I believe every single American citizen and those wanting to be citizens should read this. We truly do not ubderstand and do not APPRECIATE what freedom is.....until it disappears!
