My listing includes PHOTO OF ACTUAL BOOK for sale. Book NEAR FINE/ Covers Very Good Plus. Very gently read, if at all. Sewn binding. In its original boards which have a design in blue, red, black, light brown and white in a kind of “c” shape with the opening of the “c” downwards. The spine, quarter boards and triangular covers of all corners are brown leather. The spine has 4 raised sections done in a rope design, two of them framing a red area where the title is done in gilt. The front cover has the paper worn away on top and bottom board edges, exposing the board but with almost no erosion of the boards. The front cover design area has several areas where it is worn away but only the surface design is gone, the board is whole and strong underneath, there are no holes and no gouges or rips. The front cover leather corners are scuffed on the outer edges but there are no holes in the leather. The front cover section of the leather spine is scuffed a bit on the line where it joins the spine itself, in the areas of the rope design, and also a bit at the top and bottom and the edges. The spine itself is rubbed on the top and bottom and same edges as well as the higher parts of the rope design but the rope design is not worn down and the detail is not worn away, the red colour and gilt title are also bright and clear and have no wear. The back cover is in the same condition as the front. All paper edges have the surface paper worn off and all leather edges have minor scuffing. Page edges are medium brown, possibly from age. The side page edges form a “C” shape but this is not from the spine curving but rather the spine is rounded and bound as such with the leather when published. Inner end papers are white. Inside of book is tight, clean, clear, flat. Book is slightly over-opened at page 142 and the threads have made four small 1/8 inch closed rips on the inner side but the spine is not broken and the pages are not ripped or loose. At page 144 the binding is open on the bottom 5/8 inch from the bottom thread to the bottom edge of the page and the spine can be seen through the gap but again the spine is not broken and the page is not ripped or loose. The book is slightly over-opened at the title page meaning that the ffeps tend to fall towards the front cover away from the title page when let go by the fingers but here the inside edge of the pages is closed, there are no tiny rips from the threads, and the paper and spine are tight. I only mention it because of the value of this book. There is some age darkening inside the covers and on edges of pages and on almost all of the ffep and back end paper. Owner’s round ink initial stamp, 3/4 inch diameter, on ffep. There is no writing inside the book, no pages are underlined, torn, no holes, no stains, book smells fine, no moisture or insect damage. It is in quite remarkable condition for its age. Preface by Robert Stanley Weir Montreal March 1898.
