1628 30 Years Valtellina War 1ed Valteline Lombards Grisons Italy SPAIN PhillipThe Valtellina is a valley in Northern Lombardy in Italy which became the site for numerous military struggles between the Lombards and the Grison League in the 16th- and 17th-centuries, most notably the Thirty Years War. It also was fought over by the Hapsburgs in Austria, as well as Spain, France, the Venetians, and still the Grisons. However, the most notable battle came when Spain, aided by the Catholic Church, massacred countless Protestants in 1620. For the next 20 years, the Valtellina would be held by different conquerors, seemingly alternating leadership every year or two until 1639 when the Treaty of Macon restored the power rightly to the Grisons.
