About This Item
Detroit: Johnson Smith & Co., no date [ca 1925]. Small 8vo, unpaginated [36 pp.], including illustrated front wrapper. Publisher's pictorial, stapled stiff paper wraps.
Trace edge wear, moderately toned, otherwise very good.
The story of John "Babbacombe" Lee relayed in the first person who survived execution by hanging on three different occasions in February of 1885. After the final attempt the attending medical officer declined to proceed. Released from prison in 1907, Lee emigrated to the United States where he died in 1945. The story inspired the 1971 album "Babbacombe Lee" by the English folk rock group Fairport Convention, making it the first "folk rock opera" in music history.
