THE CROSSING is sequel to ALL THE PRETTY HORSES (1992), and, is followed by CITIES OF THE PLAIN (1998). This novel is set in the 1930's years of the Great Depression, when brothers Billy & Boyd were but boys, and World War II is yet to be. 16 year-old Billy Parham captures a pregnant she-wolf on their ranch in New Mexico where wolves attacked cattle. Billy nurses the wolf for re-homing back to the mountains of Mexico --- this is the 1st of 3 "crossings". "Crossing" 2, tells of Billy & brother Boyd's trip south to recover horses stolen from their family's spread --- Boyd is shot, nursed to health, to disappear w/a girl. "Crossing" 3 is a narrative of Billy's attempt to locate his lost brother. 426 pgs in 4 parts.

Synopsis

The Crossing is the seventh novel by author Cormac McCarthy, and the second in The Border Trilogy,  after All The Pretty Horses .   The Crossing , takes place before and during the Second World War and focuses on teenage cowboy Billy Parham and his family, following Parham on a journey to return a she-wolf to her home in the northern Mexican mountains. The novel is noted as more melancholic than All the Pretty Horses , although not as dark as McCarthy's previous work.
