Description:
This book is bound with leather covers and a cloth spine. There is a label on the front cover which is not readable. New endsheets have been added at some point in the book's long history, but the original endsheets and covers are present. There is a former owner's inscription on the original front endsheet. Pages are intact and the binding is tight. The book contains black & white drawings of muscles, bones, and bandages. There is an index for medicines and an extensive table of contents of body parts, diseases, syndromes, and treatments. Printed in the year 1846, the book itself is, in essence, a time capsule that portrays how medicine was practiced aboard an early nineteenth century sailing ship. This will make a wonderful addition to the library of the collector of medical memorabilia.

Washington, D.C.: The National Intelligencer, 1822. Newspaper. Very Good. The Pirate Fight (The Action of 9 November 1822)" by "An Officer on board the Schooner Alligator" in The National Intelligencer. Washington, D.C.: December 5, 1822. This article, which is included in the entire four-page newspaper, recounts in detail the battle between the American Schooner USS Alligator, commanded by Lieutenant William Howard Allen, of the West Indies Squadron and three pirate ships, probably commanded by Diabolito. The battle took place off the coast of Cuba on November 9, 1822. It occupies over 18" of front-page column space and has a large, capitalized headline. The paper is toned but supple; generally clean with some staining at the upper right. The spine appears to have been neatly mended. At the time of battle, the pirate force had in its possession five US merchant vessels. The Alligator, although out-gunned and out-manned, had an experienced crew which recently captured another pirate ship after a… Read More

WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
