Description:
Berwick: Printed by and for W Phorson; B. Law and Son, 1793 An extremely scarce 1st edition copy. Classed as 'fair' because it is lacking the frontispiece portrait and has been rebound in a more recent (?1960's) full leather binding. HMS Pandora was sent to recover The Bounty after the famous mutiny. It sailed on 7 November 1790 and picked up 14 of the mutineers before running aground on the Great Barrier Reef. George Hamilton was the ship's surgeon and the only eye-witness to write up an account of the voyage. This copy is in newer full leather with raised bands and faintly tooled title and author to the spine. New page marker. Contents: initial blank; title page; text 161pp; blank; table of latitudes and longitudes pp 163/4; blank. Page edges are untrimmed and the text is in very good clean condition with light toning to paper. There are some interesting pieces of ephemera: a letter from a previous owner to the Daily Telegraph in 1961, telling them about the book because they had… Read More

Description:
Complete 18 volume set, half leather with original boards and modern matching spines. 1824. Overall condition is very good. Recent fine binding using original boards. Old blanks are gone, this has new blanks. Only interior markings are pencilled numbers on back of title page. Some foxing in text, heavier in maps. Many pages uncut. 17 unpaginated maps and one plate of vocabulary. Set is a compilation of journals and texts from every major European voyage of discovery from antiquity to 1800. Kerr is not so much an author as an editor. Wherever possible he reproduced the original texts and journals. He edited them to reduce redundancy but maintain fidelity to the original text. His first volume shows the trouble he went to. He has rendered into English 9th century Icelandic texts then proceeds on to 9th and 10th century Anglo-Saxon texts. Where meaning is obscure he annotates generously. This was a major effort by a true scholar. The maps show a commensurate effort to create the best maps from the… Read More

The Nodal expedition was a reconnaissance mission sponsored by King Philip III of Spain in 1619. The purpose was to confirm the recent discoveries of Jacob Le Maire and Willem Schouten of a passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the south of Tierra del Fuego.

Folio [494 x 310 mm], 1 l., (54) ll. of text, 40 plates on large Indian paper, each one mounted with printed title, (1) l. of table.
Half-roan, rebacked, spine with raised bands and gilt fleurons. Contemporary binding.
First issue of the most sumptuous work published about the coasts and ports of Normandy during the reign of Charles X.
It was published in several parts. The first three were published under the title "Voyage pittoresque dans les ports et sur les côtes de France."
It was an atypical editorial adventure because two of the artists approached for the drawing of these exceptional plates were English: Bonington
andCopley Fielding, as well as many engravers such as Thales and Théodore Fielding, who worked in Paris, "at this remarkable time for English watercolour art".

A MASTERPIECE OF DESCRIPTIVE TRAVEL - HillFirst edition of the most popular book of maritime adventure in the eighteenth century. This can be identified as the first of two issues by a misprinted page number (219 instead of 319) and the fact that the engraved plates are all in an early state before the addition of their identifying numbers. The narrative was based on Anson's own journal, along with notes by Richard Watler who was chaplain on the ship Centurion. George Anson entered the Navy during the War of Spanish Succession and spent the next decade rising through the ranks until 1722 when he was promoted to Commander and given… Read More

FIRST EDITION of one of the most famous buccaneering voyages. This privately-funded privateering voyage sought to duplicate the success of Woodes Rogers' highly profitable voyage of 1708-1711.
Shelvocke commanded the Speedwell and John Clipperton commanded the Success. They were jointly involved in raids against Spanish shipping on the west coast of South America. Shelvocke parted from Clipperton to conduct his own raids in Peru and to sail up the coast to Cabo San Lucas where he remained for some months and wrote one of the earliest descriptions of the Indians of Baja California. He also was one of the first to suggest the possibility of finding gold in California.
Controversies surrounding the voyage began with his unjustified attack on… Read More

Sir Henry Ellis (1788-1855) was a career diplomat who joined the East India Company in 1805. In 1815 the English Government sent an envoy, under the command of Lord Amherst, to go to Peking to negotiate with the Emperor Kea K'ing on behalf of the British subjects suffering under his rule. In 1816 Ellis joined the mission as Third Commissioner. Ellis was unimpressed by the Chinese, whom he considered xenophobic, ultra-traditional, and uninteresting. The mission ended in failure after Amherst refused to 'kow-tow' (nine strikes of the forehead on the ground) to the emperor. On the return… Read More
