About This Item

Erlangen, Germany: Wolfgang Walther, 1778. First printing. Print. Fine. A handsome representation of the kangaroo based on Stubbs image from Cook's first voyage. This German representation was published in 1778, just five years after Cook's account of the first voyage was published.

Copper engraving with period hand coloring, published in the German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber's 'Die Saugthiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen' ('Mammals Illustrated after Nature with Descriptions'). Watermarked, laid paper, 9 x 6.9" (plate mark).

A noble looking fellow.
