About This Item
Grosset & Dunlap, 1934-01-01. Hardcover. Good. First ed.; 48 p., clean and unmarked anywhere; some age-toning at edges but paper strong; binding firm; pictorial boards, in absence of d.j.--and probably issued without--have bumped corners and some scuffing. Motto on creased copyright page: "A room hung with pictures is a room hung with thoughts," attributed to Sir Joshua Reynolds. Subtitle: "With Illustrations and Notes on Art Through the Ages." Good source for those interested in the history of art and art "sociology." Here are the paintings most admired by the average person probably up into the 1960s, and some are indeed lovely. Cover ill.is Sir Thomas Gainsborough's "Blue Boy" and a full-page, full-color frameable reproduction is a within, accompanied by portrait sketch of the artist and a one-page biography, plus sketch of a lady in a "Gainsborough" hat. 9 other such plates, plus many b&w reproductions, and educational essays.
