Cloth has light age-soil and edgewear, bumped spine ends and fore-edge corners. Spine square. Binding sound. Pages foxed and lightly toned, else clean. Illustrated by Paul Avril.

Original publisher's sage green cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to spine, dark green printed decoration to front, bumped spine ends and corners, light edgewear, and moderate soil. Binding cracked in a few places, otherwise sound. Text clean. Deckle-edged and gilt topped text block. Text clean. Interior mildly toned, save for two pages which are unevenly acid-browned, apparently from an old piece of paper which was at some point tucked into the book. Minor, scattered foxing and smudges of soil to interior, mostly near page edges. Pages are thick, handcrafted paper watermarked with overlapping "A" and "O". Profusely illustrated by Paul Avril on every page of text with highly detailed monochrome headpieces, borders, etc. Early gift inscription in ink to second blank page. The gentlemen of the Academy define it 'as a small piece of furniture which serves to set the air in motion' Others prefer an 'an air producing instrument' or alternatively 'a sort of portable screen with which ladies fan themselves.'
143 pages later you should be much wiser if you can stay the pace because it's not the easiest of reads. However it is well decorated and illustrated by Paul Avril which is much in its favour.
