New York, E. Bliss & E. White, 1821.. Large 12°, publisher's boards with original printed spine label (front cover detached, spine chipping, other binding wear, some stains). Foxed. Nevertheless in good, uncut condition. Ownership inscription on recto of torn front free endleaf of Samuel Mourhouse, dated 1832. 250 pp., (1 blank l.). *** First American Edition. Published in London in the same year, and again the following year in London and in Lexington, Kentucky. The author describes and comments on customs, religious practices, government, etc. in Bengal. Ward (1769-1823) travelled to India in 1799, where for many years he supervised the printing press at the Danish settlement of Serampúr. *** Shoemaker 7568.
