About This Item

This is a nice condition lot of 4 original, Civil War-era issues of "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper." The issues are dated February 7, 14, 21 and 28, 1863 and feature wonderful engravings and illustrated advertisements. The pages are un-cut and still attached along the edges. The February 14, 21 and 28 issues contain "cartoons" featuring ABRAHAM LINCOLN. The February 21 issue contains a 2-page engraving of the marriage of General Tom Thumb to Miss Lavinia Warren.

The lot contains an abundance of CIVIL WAR content (both articles and engravings) - here are a few examples of the engravings:
* a night burial at sea
* Union soldiers butchering and dressing cattle for distribution
* the blowing up of the U.S. gunboat Westfield
* defences of Charleston
* the capture of Arkansas Post
* march of the Army of the Potomac towards the Rappahannock River
* the removal of Rebel torpedoes
* bombardment by Union gunboats
* sharpshooters picking off Rebel gunners
* the war in Louisiana
* defences of the Savannah River
* the battle of Stone River, TN
* night burial of Colonel Garesche
* a Rebel shell bursting on a gunboat
* Rebel rams and iron-clads

Condition:
Nice condition lot with only some minimal wear that would be expected, such as occasional stains, foxing and tears. The top edge of all issues have "Ref. 071" written in pencil and "Attleboro Public Library Joseph L. Sweet Memorial" stamped in ink.
