About This Item

8vo. Original paper boards; paper label on spine. Printed by B. Bensley; Published by the Author; London 1829. "A New Edition."

Cobbett had spent his youth in the army, stationed in New Brunswick, where he felt the officers were corrupt and the soldiers underpaid and mistreated. He published The Soldier's Friend in 1792, complaining on these grievances, which caused him to fear reprisal, and so he fled to France. Unfortunately, he arrived at the height of the French Revolution, so his plan to learn French more thoroughly was sidetracked as he continued on to the United States. Once there he found employment teaching English to French exiles, learning their language in the process, resulting in his French Grammar.

Board corners and edges are bumped a bit, with some staining; leaves are clean and amply margined; uncut; with the last leaves of quire K unopened, and with some mild foxing and occasional mild toning; o/w Very Nice.
