About This Item

The Grapes of Wrath - John Steinbeck (1940 Red Imitation Leather Hardcover) 20th Century American Literature Classic Great Depression

Reprint by Garden City, who was not the original publisher of this work by Steinbeck. Copyright 1939, published 1940 by Garden City Publishing Co., Inc. (New York). Red imitation leather hardcovers with gilt design on the spine. Covers show moderate wear, in particular, heavy rubbing and wear-through to the leather at the edges, corners, and spine head & tail. The cover also nicks/scratches to the leather and the red color will rub off when handled. Leather hardcover has bumped corners. Textblock has a large spot on the top edge and a large 1-inch impression on the bottom edge. Most of the pages throughout the book have varying degrees of tanning, more so on pages at the front and rear of the textblock. Rear pastedown is scuffed towards the foreedge. Overall due to the wear of the leather, this book is in Good condition.

Synopsis

John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath stands as a pivotal piece of American literature. The story follows the Joad family (and thousands of others) as they are driven from the Oklahoma farm where they are sharecroppers during the Great Depression. The drought, economic hardship, and changes in financial and agricultural industries send them searching for dignity and honest work in the bountiful state of California. The novel earned Steinbeck the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1940, and inspired the classic film of the same name the same year. The film starred Henry Fonda as Tom Joad, and Steinbeck's words and ideas shine through that medium. In 1962, Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for the body of his work, and The Grapes of Wrath stands as his most recognized and esteemed book. -
