The fourth edition.Complete in three volumes.Half-title is present to each volume.Set in the 1760s to 1780 in Galloway, Scotland, 'Guy Mannering' follows a young boy who is kidnapped at the age of 5 by smugglers. The novel follows the young boy, Harry, and his adventures as he grows up.Walter Scott is best known for his historical novels and poems, including 'Waverley', 'Ivanhoe', and 'The Lady of the Lake'.Bookplate of D. B. Anderson to the recto of the front endpaper of Volume I. In a rebacked half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing to the boards. Front joint of Volume I is a little strained but remains firm, with a crack to the front joint. Minor bumping to the extremities. Loss to the head of the spine of Volume I. A few light marks to the boards and spines. Light rubbing and surface cracks to the spines. Hinges of Volume I are strained but remain firm. Hinges of Volumes II and III are starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some scattered spots. Worming to the tail of the first few pages of Volume II, with no loss of text. Good
Synopsis
On the auspicious night that Guy Mannering is shown to the house of the Bertrams of Ellengowan, the Bertrams' heir is born, and Mannering, a skeptical astrologer, predicts the child's future. Five years later the prophecy is fulfilled, and the heir, Harry Bertram, becomes the center of a plot to rob the boy of his inheritance. Harry's subsequent struggles are set against a backdrop of chaos and upheaval in a socially fragmented Scotland where everyone, from landowners to gypsies, is searching for their rightful place.
