First edition of this first biographical study of Henry Ossawa Tanner, the first African American artist to attain international distinction. Born in Pennsylvania, Tanner is known "not only for his early studies of Negro life, but for his landscapes and, more especially, his biblical paintings, which illustrate the fully developed poetic and mystical qualities of his work." Inscribed and signed by the Series Editor, John Hope Franklin.
