A bright first UK edition of this sweeping historical novel by James Jones, complete with its unclipped dust wrapper. The first UK edition, first impression preceded by the true first US edition the year prior. James Jones' famous debut novel, focusing on some members of the US Army infantry company in Hawaii before and during the attack on Pearl Harbour in World War Two, loosely based on the author's experiences in the Company E of the Hawaiian Division's 27th Infantry in the pre-World War II. Winner of the National Book Award, and named one of the best one hundred novels of the twentieth century by the Modern library Board. Later made into the award-winning film starring Burt Lancaster. With the unclipped dust wrapper. In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. The dust wrapper is sound and unclipped, with some shelf wear, minor loss to the head of the spine, light soiling to the wraps. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Near Fine
Synopsis
James Ramon Jones was an American author known for his explorations of World War II and its aftermath. His novel, From Here to Eternity, won the Nation Book Award in 1952. This action-drama novel is set in the 1930’s in Hawaii, and culminates in the assault on Pearl Harbor in December of 1941. Although the book may appear to be solely a war novel, it has been touted as the best account of life in the peacetime army ever written. With brilliantly descriptive scenes and richly detailed characters, the author captures and holds the readers interest.
