About This Item

New York and Tokyo:: Weatherhill, 1984. 7.25" wide by 10.5" tall. A bright, shiny, square, tight copy. Would be FINE but for a gift note on front endpaper. The Dust Jacket is a little rubbed. No chips. No tears. No remainder mark. Pages are clean, crisp and unmarked. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Illustrated with 244 photographs, some in full-color. The author provides a 7-page Introduction and a paragraph of commentary on each of the images. Bound in the original carmine pink boards, with a black cloth spine lettered in silver. Sharp corners. From the Dust Jacket: "To suit the needs of super mass production, the traditional natural materials are too obstreperous... and one by one we have replaced them with the docile, predictable synthetics... What we have gained from these [new] materials... is a subject for other forums. But what we have lost for sure is what this book is all about: a once-common sense of fitness in the relationships between hand, material, use, and shape, and above all, a sense of delight in the look and feel of very ordinary, humble things. This book is thus... a totally unexpected monument to a culture, a way of life, a universal sensibility carried through all objects down to the smallest, most inconsequential, and ephemeral things.". Seventh printing of the 1975 original.. Hard Cover. Near Fine condition/Near Fine DJ (price clipped). Illus. by Sakai, Michikazu (photography). 216pp..

About About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well.
