About This Item
Boston, Massachusetts: Richard G. Badger, 1911. 76 pages. Rare book including photos of carved wooden statuary that were used as sidewalk advertising for cigar stores. The folk carvings included women, baseball players, policemen, etc., but the main emphasis was on native Americans--the proverbial "Cigar Store Indian." There is no credit given to photographer Jessie Tarbox Beals, but she was a friend of the author, and some of the images can be found in the Beals collection at the City Museum of New York. The book is clean and tight, with a bright cover with unrubbed gilded lettering and a small gilded taxi cab with a woman taking photos from a rear window. Corners and spine extremities are rubbed; pages lightly toned; 2 pages with short (less than 1/2 inch) closed tears. A nice copy of this highly sought after book.. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Illus. by Kate Sanborn and Jessie Tarbox Beals. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.
