About This Item
London: T Cadell et al., 1830. Leather. Very Good Indeed. 8.5" by 6". J M W Turner; Thomas Stothard; Samuel Prout. An attractive copy of the first illustrated edition of this poet's masterpiece. In a full straight grained morocco binding, with gilt detailing. The first illustrated edition of this work, published in 1830.Despite being one of the most celebrated English poets of his day, Samuel Roger's fame has since been greatly overshadowed by his friends Coleridge, Wordsworth and Byron. The first part of this work was published anonymously in 1822; the second, with Rogers' name attached, in 1828. Neither were commercially successful, prompting Rogers to commission illustrations from artists J M W Turner, Thomas Stothard and Samuel Prout. These new, detailed, steel engravings proved popular, and the new edition was a triumph. In the original full straight grained morocco binding. Externally, lovely. Some rubbing and losses to the extremities and joints. Internally, firmly bound. Some spotting throughout, heaviest to the first few pages. Very Good Indeed
