About This Item

This is a vintage copy of "JANE EYRE" by Charlotte Bronte with its original dust jacket. Circa 1950's (there is no date of publication stated); The Modern Library; New York. From the dust jacket: "In her introduction to her sister's novel, Wuthering Heights, Charlotte Bronte wrote: 'The writer who possesses the creative gift owns something that strangely wills and works for itself.' This observation has an especial application to her own Jane Eyre, for it emphasizes the reasons for the vitality and individuality of one of the most highly cherished treasures in our literature. Since it is partially autobiographical, the poignancy of Jane Eyre is linked to the deathless interest and the heartrending pathos of the lives of the Brontes." Condition: Clean covers and spine. The lettering on the front cover and spine has partially faded. Tiny cloth tear at the top-left corner tip of the back cover. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only staining along the gutter between pages 22 and 23. The pages up to page 22 at the front have a light diagonal crease at the lower-outer corner. The blue top stain at the top edge of the text block has partially faded. Overall the book is in Very Good condition. The dust jacket has some small tears along the perimeter, and some small pieces missing/tears at the top of the spine and flap corners...overall the jacket is in Good condition.

Synopsis

Jane Eyre is a famous and influential novel by the English writer Charlotte Brontë. It was published in London, England in 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. with the title Jane Eyre, an Autobiography under the pen name "Currer Bell".  Orphaned as a child, Jane felt like an outcast during her childhood. She was sent by her cruel aunt to a boarding school where she was met with further torment. After the devastating loss of a friend, she finds herself enrolled under a new headmaster at the Lowood School and finds her life drastically changed. She spends eight more years at Lowood, six as a student and two as a teacher. Her courage is tested once again when she arrives at Thornfield Hall, where she has been hired by the brooding, proud Edward Rochester to care for his ward Adèle. Jane finds herself drawn to his troubled yet kind spirit. She falls in love. Hard. But there is a terrifying secret inside the gloomy, forbidding Thornfield Hall…
