About This Item
Paris: Michel Lévy Frères , 1887-1892. Leather. Good. 7.5" by 5". None. A complete three volume set of Sand's romantic French novel, 'The Snowman'. 'Nouvelle Édition'. Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin was best known by her pseudonym, George Sand and was a French Novelist and memoirist, remembered for her affairs with Frederic Chopin and Alfred de Musset as much as her work. Sand actively supported the February revolution of 1848 as a radical left-wing supporter, but the events of the June Day uprising shattered her Utopian illusions and her work reflected that, returning to the romantic spirit of her earlier work. 'The Snowman' is part of her later romantic work, along with 'Jean de la Roche'. A mixed edition set, with volume I published in 1887, and volume II and III published in 1892. All volumes are from the larger collection 'Oeuvres Complètes de George Sand', edited by Calvin Lévy and published by the Parisian publishing house Michel Lévy Frères. In French. In a uniform half calf binding with marbled paper boards. Externally bumped and rubbed to extremities. Rubbing to paper boards, joints, and leather to spine. Bumping to head and tail of spines resulting in slight loss to leather. Spine labels detached and lacking to volume I and III. Leather to spine partially detached to backstrip, volume II but still holding. Front joint partially split and tender, volume I and II. Rear joint and hinge slightly strained but firm, volume I and II. Joints slightly strained but firm, volume III. Front hinge split and tender, with front free-endpaper and title page detached but present, volume II. Hinges split and strained, but still reasonably firm, volume I and III. Internally firmly bound, slightly strained in places. Pages age toned to edges, but clean throughout. Small sections of chipping to the extremity of the odd page, not affecting text. Prior owner's ink inscription to title page dated '94', all volumes. Very slight ink marking to half title page, volume III. Small scattered spotting to lower extremity of page 1/2, volume III, not affecting text. Good
