About This Item

London: Longmans, Green and Co. , 1894-6. First edition. Cloth. Good. 7.5" by 5.5". Not Stated . A collection of the three volumes completing Ralph Payne-Gallwey's guide to shooting, a miscellany of early editions, the third series is a first. A complete guide to shooting for young sportsmen, in three volumes. Comprising the fourth edition of the first series, published in 1895, which looks at picking the perfect gun and its use; the second edition of the second series published in 1894, focussing on the killing and preserving game, with directions in shooting woodpigeons and breaking in retrievers; the first edition of the third series of 1896 with the history of British game birds and how to shoot them. Illustrated in text throughout, with a frontispiece portrait of the author to the second volume and facsimile signature. From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'.  In the original publisher's full cloth binding. Externally sound with minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities, the upper joint of vol. I slightly cracked but holding firm, minor soiling to the boards. The spine of vol. I has slightly darkened. With William Herbert Peto's bookplate to the front pastedowns of the first two volumes. Annotated in pencil by a previous owner to the half title of volume one. Previous ownership signature to the front blank page of volume three, undated. Some foxing to the first few leaves, light foxing throughout. Illustrated in text by the author, with a frontispiece portrait of the author to vol. II and an illustrated frontispiece to vol. III.
