About This Item

Boston: S. Kneeland & T. Green for H. Foster, 1738. Disbound. Very Good binding. Octavo. [2], 34 pp. First edition. Removed from volume; lacks half title and final blank, else complete; trimmed close on the bottom edge, touching but not removing a few words of a note on one page; otherwise, touching only catchwords on a few leaves. Occasional foxing/toning and few isolated instances of dampstaining, but generally a clean copy of an early American imprint with a striking headband atop the opening page with a beehive bracketed by cornucopias and birds. (Reilly 133).

Barnard (1681-1770), a Harvard man and self professed troublemaker according to his untitled autobiography, settled into his permanent pulpit at Marblehead in 1714. He would be a conservative voice and an Old Light in the 1740s, in outspoken opposition to the Great Awakening. Perhaps most known for A Zeal for Good Works (1742), where he argued for "zeal guided by knowledge, tempered with prudence, and accompanied with charity," as opposed to the New Light stress on salvation through faith alone. This is uncommon in commerce. Evans 4219; ESTC W20701; Oxford American National Biography.
