This children's photobook tells the history of the Magnitogorsk Metallurgical Plant and gives an overview of the manufacturing process at the plant. It also includes a small article about the hard everyday life of American laborers and the unemployment rate in America.
Magnitogorsk, an industrial city in Chelyabinsk Oblast, was established in 1929 and modeled after two of the most advanced steel-producing cities in the US at that time: Gary and Pittsburgh. Since 1931 several hundred foreign specialists arrived to manage the work, including a team of architects headed by Ernst May. In 1937 foreigners were obliged to leave, and Magnitogorsk was declared a closed city.
The author, Nikolay Mislavskiy (1903-1974), worked in the Leninist Communist Youth Union and the Institute of Red Professors. He was twice arrested and exiled. After that, his books were put in libraries' special storage spetskhran till 1963.
