New York: D. Appleton and Co, 1899. Hardcover. Good +. xv, [1], 329 p.: in-text and full-page line drawings; 20 cm. Original half calf with marbled paper over boards. Gilt-stamped spine title. Top page edges gilt. Contents: I. On the natural history of the man-like apes. -- II. On the relations of man to the lower animals. -- III. On some fossil remains of man. -- IV. On the methods and results of ethnology (1865) -- V. On some fixed points in British ethnology (187l) -- VI. On the Aryan question (1890). The first three essays were published in 1863 as Man's Place in Nature; the other three essays were previously published variously in Fortnightly Review, Contemporary Review, Critiques and Addresses, and Nineteenth Century. In Good+ Condition: cover is rubbed with slight loss of paper along front board edges; leather just starting to separate along joints from each end; slight loss of leather at ends of spine; a few pages opened carelessly with loss along fore-edge, not touching text; occasional light soiling; otherwise clean and tight.
