All illustrated throughout with in-text diagrams and sketches. Edited by Justin Winsor, an American writer, librarian and historian. His work had strong bibliographical and cartographical elements. He was seen as an authority on the history of North America and elected the first president of the American Library Association. Volume one contains an introduction to the text and bibliographies, geographical knowledge of ancients, cartography of Greenland, critical essays on Mexico, Central America and the Inca civilization in Peru. Volume two contains essays on Columbus, the Spanish and Portuguese discoveries, ancient Florida, discoveries on the Pacific coast, and the Amazon and Eldorado. Illustrated throughout with in-text diagrams and sketches. Volume three contains details of the voyages of the Cabots, Hawkins and Drake, voyages to Guiana, the founding of Pennsylvania, the English in New York, pilgrim churches, and New England. Volume four contains maps of the Eastern Coast, cartography of the Northeast Coast, the Jesuits, atlases and charts of the sixteenth century, and New Netherland and New Sweden. Volume five contains essays on Canada and Louisiana, the middle colonies, the English colonization of Georgia, French and Indian wars of New England, and the struggle for the great valleys. Volume six contains critical essays on impending revolution, conflict, independence, treason of Arnold, the naval history of the American Revolution, and the Indians and border warfare. Volume seven contains a discussion of the United States of America, peace negotiations, loyalists, confederation, the history of political parties, and the diplomacy of the United States. Volume eight contains essays on, the Hudson Bay Company, Arctic explorations, Canada from 1763-1867, Spanish North America, the colonial history of South America, and the editor's final statement. In the original black cloth binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd handling mark. Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
