Garden City, NY: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1914. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Gordon Grant. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, first edition with viii on last contents page and sense misspelled (sence) at the bottom of page 19. Blue cloth boards show scuffing and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear. Spine is darkened and is worn on edges. The cloth does have a mesh pattern though the exterior looks well-worn. The interior hinge is cracked at the rear board but the front board is still intact. Binding is a bit shaky in spots and scattered spotting/foxing is present throughout and there is some pulling at spots, including at the title page. No signatures or bookplates, no handwriting, no library markings found.
Synopsis
Penrod is a collection of comic sketches by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Booth Tarkington that was first published in 1914. The book follows the trials and misadventures of Penrod Schofield, an eleven-year-old boy growing up in the pre-World War I Midwestern United States, in a similar vein to Tom Sawyer. Penrod establishes the characters and the relationships between them who go on to appear in two further books, Penrod and Sam (1916) and Penrod Jashber (1929).

Purchases will ship by US Media Mail or Priority Mail (if buyer selects) and higher priced items may have insured placed on the order and will typically ship within one business day. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 5 lbs., but only in unusual cases. Insurance is available upon request though we normally place insurance on any item of $75 or higher at no additional cost to the buyer. Non-US sales will ship by First Class International or Global Priority. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 4 lbs.
We always take extra care in packaging and shipping. Books are typically wrapped in packing paper or bubblewrap before packaged in a sturdt shipping box. All orders, even those shipped by US Media Mail, will be given a USPS tracking number which will be sent to the buyer so they will know when to expect arrival. Please let us know if there is a book with incorrect or missing photos. We recently moved the inventory to Biblio and a title or two may have had issues with the photos being transferred over.

If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.
