Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and seven plates, octavo, pp (12), 419, (60), 70, the hinge at the title page cracking but firm, slightly dusty internally but otherwise good, the pages a little waved throughout (not through damp, more as though they are unpressed), an early paper repair to the rear of the frontispiece, a corner torn from the front endpaper (removing the early signature sadly), contemporary full vellum, age-toned and a bit marked, the corners worn, an inked title on the spine, an armorial emblem of the City of Utrecht blind-stamped on each cover. Endpapers are heavily toned and there are some light pencil scrawls on REP's (child scribbling?). Some end papers have small tears and creases. This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
