London: Hurst and Blackett, 1902. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Grant, by profession a railway engineer and entrepreneur, left England in 1899 to survey the Upper Yangtse region for the purpose of rail development. Descending the Yellow River by raft to reach Peking, he drowned when the raft capsized. His companion, Captain Watts-Jones, was to survive, but only for a fortnight, when he was killed by the deputy prefect at Kwai-hwa-cheng. The text is based on Birch's diaries, "somewhat compressed and modified in form." 8vo. Publisher's polished blue cloth, gilt titles, rules, to spine, with gilt dragon and titling to cover. b&w frontis photograph of author. xvi, 379, [4, pub's adverts]. With numerous b&w photographs, many full page, others inset in text. Wear to head of spine, very minor rubs to tips. Rear board with a few marks. Still a very clean, sound copy, binding firm.

In a contemporary calf binding with six compartments to spine, separated by double gilt rules. The binding very worn, with tips badly rubbed and front board all but detached. [2, dedication], 1-6, preface and contents; [2, directions to the plates, and to verso, author's catalogue]; 1-396; [6, index]; The Supplement, 1-48. With 23 plates to the first section and a further 13 plates to the Supplement, all with the old folds with only Plate IV from the first section loose. All the plates in bright, sharp condition. Some minor pencil marks to flyleaf and title page. Text block with light wear to leading page edges, but overall a clean, sound example, binding tight. A remarkable populariser of science, especially astronomy, Ferguson was also renowned for his globes and mechanical apparatus.

Ample provenance for this copy: inked previous owner's name of Geoffrey Byrne, dated 1924 to front pastedown; and of Alec L(?) Ellis to flyleaf. To rear pastedown, the well-designed bookplate of Nicholas Wilde, a collector of Uranian materials and illustrator of at least one such work. pp. 71. Rough trimmed page edges. Rounded top corners as issued, somewhat rubbed and worn, a few faint marks to boards, top edges spotted, but still a nice copy, internally clean, binding tight.

With a superb collection of illustrations, ranging from Edo period woodblock prints, to contemporary photos of yakuza gangs. The photographs show scenes in the run up to the second trial which led to his rehabilitation and the trial itself - which started on August 7th, 1899 - through to facsimiles of letters about the case and pictures of Dreyfus's wife and friends. Only three recorded copies held by institutions, two of them in the UK, both stated as the seventh edition, another in Israel. There appears to be no available online record of a first edition. Small nicks and chips to the edges of the wraps, wear to wraps along spine. An old horizontal fold to centre, not prominent. Staples are free of rust and the binding remains firm if a little fragile. Consists of No's 43 (Spring 1993); 54–59; 60–61; 70–79; 80–84; 86–88; 90–91; 94–99; 102, 105 and 112 (Autumn 2010). A wonderful panorama of literary currents and talent over the period, featuring a plethora of writers from the UK and globally, including Hanif Kureishi, Jeanette Winterson, Iain Banks, and Geoff Dyer, to Milan Kundera, Gary Shteyngart and Pankaj Mishra. Generally in very good to better condition, with the majority fine, some pristine and all but as new. A minority have small creases to tips, very minor crease marks to covers along edges of spine. A heavy collection; additional postage will be requested for orders from overseas.

No Place: No Publisher, 2014. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Square 4to (26.75cm). In the grey slipcase, with white blocked lettering, minor rubs to edges. Vol I in dark blue cloth with white blocked lettering, consists of Neville's photographs taken as the official British artist in residence in Helmand Province in 2011. They depict British soldiers, and Afghan scenes. A later section is of photos taken in the UK of military events, contrasting with the first section. Neville writes in a final section of his difficulties adjusting to life on hist return to the UK. Vol II in red cloth, provides first person accounts by British serving personnel and former soldiers of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder acquired while on active duty. Vol II is edited by Professor James Hacker Hughes, a leading expert on military related PTSD and its treatment. Minor signs of handling but both volumes about fine, both signed by Neville.

A history of Chinese language dictionaries, from the earliest times to the modern era, and the first to be published in English on the subject. An authoritative account.

1937. Hardcover. Very good +. Oblong 4to (27.5cm x 36cm) In a smart, well made photo album with patterned leather textured dark red boards with black woven string ties. Stamped Daimaru, a leading Japanese department store at the time, to inner rear board. The album starts with ephemera from the voyage over, including an information for passengers pamphlet, the New Year's Day menu for Friday, January 1st, 1937, and route map and continues with pictures and text from what would have been a tourist guide for the passengers, with reproductions of ukiyo-e prints, and colour photos of Japanese traditional activities with text. The album continues with tickets, shows and labels collected in Japan. The compiler appears to be a Leslie Llewellyn, with a press cutting from the Bideford and North Devon Weekly Gazette dated December 29, 1937 authored by him outlining details of a trip he had made over the course of six months to Japan. To rear, bound in on a different paper stock and dated September 1903, 32 pages of publisher's advertisements, now slightly toned. Top edges gilt. With the author's designed device to title page. Rolphe's masterpiece and still in print, features George Rose, its protagonist, in a not so thinly veiled self-portrait of the author, who lives out a wish fulfilment fantasy of being elected Pope. A previous owner has written across the front free endpapers in a small, neat contemporary hand a key to the main characters in the novel. To verso of the ffep the wonderful curse bookplate of C. J. Peacock, clearly not the writer of the notes, which offers the invocation, “who folds a leafe downe ye divel toaste browne / who makes marke or blotte ye divel roaste hot / who stealeth thisse boke ye divel shall cooke”. With a further 15 b&w plates. Jacket cover shows a portrait of Fry by Vanessa Bell. The jacket is chipped with some loss around head of spine, with consequent fade to cloth, and further small nicks and closed tears. Overall still a clean, decent jacket. Half title and first blank to rear endpapers with noticeable offsetting. The book is otherwise a clean, firm copy, free of marks. The last book by Virginia Woolf published in her lifetime. Tipped in, a 1-page TLS by Selznick on her headed notepaper to the previous owner and dated March 29, 1987, in reply to a letter he had sent her. Selznick's entertaining letter is a remarkably heartfelt tribute to the fan, if possibly somewhat tongue in cheek, ending, "I'll have you know there is no letter written me about my book as rewarding as yours. I look forward to meeting you some day and telling you how I cherish it". Signed off by Selznick with a handwritten note, "I am in your debt." Also enclosed, The Guardian newspaper obituary of the author, and what appears to be the last page of a TLS from an Anton Jubali, discussing David Selznick's relationship with Louis Mayer after the latter had been ousted as chief executive of MGM. Features 48 photographic plates of covers from Monk's collection of artists' books, starting with Statements by Lawrence Weiner, to a Sol LeWitt work. The first 48 leaves with glossy card stock to rectos; thereafter, 6 blank leaves, and the last section, a transcript of a conversation between Monk and Seth Siegelaub, 'On Book Making & Book Collecting,' printed on orange coloured stock. Some very light wear to cover edges; a few very faint marks (finger smudges?) to cover, small crease mark to lower front tip. A fun conceptual look at artists' books in the format of an artist's book.

NP: Magnum Photos, 2025. Limited issue. As new. Taken in Kamonomiya, Japan, 1999 and previously published in his books ‘Go’ and ‘Cherry Blossom’. Measures 6"x6" and signed by Gilden to verso. Described by Magnum as museum quality. Bōsōzoku were the large Japanese biker gangs and social phenomenon of the 80s and 90s, now much diminished. Enclosed in the sealed archival sleeve. Gilden, a doyen of American street photography and Magnum Photos member since 1998.

NP (but Tokyo): Roshin Books, June 1, 2017. Second Edition of 900 copies. Hardcover. Fine. 4to (23.75cm). Featuring b&w photographs of Fukase's cat Sasuke. In the pale tan suede over boards, with embossed out line of a cat to upper board. Looselyinserted, a three page fold out foreword, by Fukase, English text to one side, Japanese text to verso. pp. 104 with 80 b&w plates, accompanied by Fukase's original annotations in Japanese. From the publisher: “Afterword is composed of photos used in the afterword ’Sasuke’s Diary’ from 'Sasuke, My Dear Cat', published by Seinen Shokan in 1978. In the small pocket-sized printing manuscript were instructions and numbering written by Fukase himself.” Roshin published the first edition of this book in 2016, and reprinted it in 2017, in identical format and the same isbn, but with a lighter colour to the cover. All but as new.

A classic of English prose in one of the most extensive and best illustrated editions. 8vo (22.5cm). Contemporary straight grain green morocco, recently rebacked with renewed spine and later marbled endpapers. Glt lettering to spine and gilt borders, five bands with gilt borders, gilt rules to boards, with faded gilt dentelles. Yellow endpapers. pp. 64. The ownership label of Edmund Evans, the book's engraver, to front pastedown. Edges of boards rubbed, some small chips to base of front board, rear board has a patch rubbed away to the underlying card. Internally, a bright, firm copy, with some very minor foxing to rear endpapers. There are 54 games described by Greenaway, with 24 of them illustrated. The illustrations all remain bright and clean, including Battledore, Oranges and Lemons, and Follow-my-Leader. While undated, that it is Evans's own copy, suggests it is almost certainly the true first. A lovely association copy.

Shanghai: Commercial Press, 1931. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Slim 8vo. Blue textured cloth, gilt titles to spine, cover. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown with inked name to flyleaf and what may be old bookseller notes on the text. The C17th telling of the author's relationship with the renowned concubine, published after her death. See the extensive Wiki article on Dong Xiaowan. pp. 159. Overall, a clean, bright copy and a scarce translation of an important work illustrating the world of elite courtesans in Ming China.

Illustrated endpapers. Unclipped dust jacket, housed within a removable cellophane sleeve, is a very bright example, with no wear, fading or discolouration. The book likewise has no signs of wear, but there is some minor rippling to the pages along the top edges, starting near the spine and extending across for about 3cm, and reaching down by some 8cm, which starts at the front and disappears by pp. 51.
