Description:
Four octavo volumes varying in size, pagination & date of publication, all first editions, illustrated throughout, the first three ex-library in library bindings, one in dust jacket.
Incudes:Vol I: 1741-1850. New York: Appleton, 1930;
Vol II: 1850-1865; Cambridge: Harvard, 1938;
Vol III: 1865-1885. Cambridge: Harvard, 1938;
Vol IV: 1885-1905. Cambridge: Harvard, 1957.
Volumes I, II & III display typical library markings including card pockets in two volumes. Volume four is in the original binding & price-clipped dust jacket which is faded at the spine, exhibits modest edge wear, & has a gift inscription at the front pastedown, withal, a useful set of an important treatise.
The author was professor of English & director of the school of journalism at the University of Iowa & thereafter Dean of the University of Missouri. Volumes II & IIi of this important set won the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for History. A fifth volume was published posthumously in 1968 & is not included in this group.
