About This Item

Paperback. Good. Calendar for 1934 published by the German sports paper "Sankt Georg", Berlin; 165x245mm; colour printed cover of a young rider breasting a hill on an exuberantly charging horse apparently conveying his joy in riding in the new Germany of the time, duly reifying Hitler's words quoted on the opening page "Nur durch eigene Arbeit, eigenen Fleiss und eigene Beharrlichkeit können wir emporsteigen". Each page carries one or more black and white photographs generally including horses, sometimes racing, sometimes in triumphal procession, sometimes with young riders, sometimes featuring bucolic or romantically historic scenes, Nazi officers or eminent personages such as Mussolini, Göring or the like and frequently with some supposedly uplifting saying or quotation. That for June 17-20, for instance, quotes Stein "Ich habe nur ein Vaterland, das heist Deutschland!", a sentiment uncomfortably close to far too many political expressions currently popular not only with perhaps understandably disenchanted populations but too often also with mainstream leaders who clearly lack any proper sense of history or understanding that only by being a citizen of the world can one properly be a citizen of a given country. The calendar pages, perforated at the head, generally cover three or four dates each (though sometimes fewer), starting each month and each week on a new page. The head perforation on the opening cover is opened to about 4-5cm from either side, there is a small crease at the lower right corner of the cover, and the cardboard back is creased across near the foot but the calender is otherwise in very good condition, perhaps particularly for such an ephemeral object now over eighty years old. This item dates from the year Hitler, on Hindenburg's death and having become Chancellor the year before, assumed the unique title of Führer, Leader of Nazi Germany and thus head of state as well as head of the government so ensuring that no legal challenge to remove him could succeed. A red stamp on the inside of the back board identifies F Bauermeister as the successor company to Wilson Ross & Company, Publishers, Foreign Booksellers and Bookbinders in Bank Street, Edinburgh. NOTE that this item will not be sent to any location where Nazi-associated material is prohibited unless a valid exclusion permission (for instance, for an academic or similar research institution) is supplied.
