Camberwell Press in association with Royal Mail, 1999, only edition, published in an edition of 2000 copies; 150x136mm, 120pp, unnumbered and each consisting of a folded sheet uncut at the fore-edge and perforated horizontally at the midline; hand bound by Shepherds Bookbinders in charcoal paper over card and designed to mimic an envelope, all edges silvered; very small smudge on the upper corner of one of the blank pages towards the end but otherwise a near fine copy. *** *** *** The book is the intended outcome of the Royal Mail Millennium Stamps project and is a wonderful celebration of British art and design. 48 specially designed stamps, four a month, were commissioned from a range of British artists and issued during 1999. John Murray, London, 1933, first edition; small quarto, pp 115; green paper boards and spine, slightly discoloured under the dustwrapper which is itself slightly frayed at the edges, but still a good to very good copy. As the dust wrapper comments "For many years Lady Cave has taken a special interest in the high character and domestic virtues of the ant. She has acquired much quaint information about them, and her enthusiasm has impelled some of her friends to break out at her behest into (often most unaccustomed) verse. Prime Ministers and Professors, Men of Business and Men of Leisure, all contribute to this very real ant-hology." Contributors include Rudyard Kipling, Julian Huxley, Beverley Nichols, James Barrie, Owen Seaman, Stanley Baldwin, Laurence Housman, Baden-Powell and Humbert Wolfe. Estella Cave was the wife of George, later Viscount Cave, a lawyer and a Conservative MP, Home Secretary under Lloyd-George and also Lord Chancellor.

Kapa Press, New York, 2001, apparently first edition; unsigned but tall 8vo (165x280mm), pp88, alternating a poem and a facing coloured illustration; blue paper boards, grey paper spine, coloured dustwrapper; very good copy. Loosely inserted are a leaflet for Kapa Press publications, a marketing card for this book and a couple of visiting cards, one of them for Papagapitos.

Bodley Head, London, 1922; small 4to, pp vii, [37]; half dark red roan, red cloth, marbled end papers; both boards detached, corners and spine rubbed; frontispiece and five full page coloured plates and a further two line drawings for chapter heads; printed on thick paper; some scattered foxing but internally in good, clean, tight condition. It's not about those wise men but is a story around three professional men, strangers, who meet on a train, discover they're going to the same remote place in Cornwall, have a difficult journey and end up helping to deliver a baby and duly marvel at life from their different points of view.

Taipei: Student Book Co., Ltd.. Hardback. Very Good. nd (1967 or later?); pp [1], 61 and 90. Some staining on the inside front cover where the glue fixing the end paper appears to have seeped through but otherwise in very good condition. The book is in two parts, the first largely in English and the second part in Chinese but also with tables in arabic numerals. As the title indicates it's a study of chronological and related information found by studying Western Chou bronzes. NOTE: on account of the size and weight of this books the postage cost will be LESS than the amount (which must be) shown and will be advised before an order is confirmed. The Western Chou, or Zhou, period was from 1046-771 BC and in 1928 archaeological excavation began around the relevant area of the Shang dynasty and yielded significant and rich artifacts until the work was interrupted by WWII, subsequently falling to looting and destruction until guided excavation began again in 1975.

London, 1821; 12m0, pp iv, 114; full calf, binding rubbed, front board loose, lacks both end papers, old ink scribbling on both the verso of the frontispiece and the back pasted end paper, some browing but also extensive soilding through use throughout, part torn out of final leaf with consequent slight loss of text; noted as "end of first part" on the last sheet but apparently complete with 50 fables; engraved frontispiece of a theatrical mask, decorated title, and with each fable decorated with a wood engravings by Thomas Bewick at the head. Printed at the Government Printing Office, Kuching, 1962; 8vo, pp 30, 8pp of photographs; burgundy paper wrappers, spine a little faded and staples rusted but otherwise in very good condition. This has been reprinted from Sarawak's Annual Report. Tom Harrisson was that Tom Harrisson, polymath, sometime anthropologist and founder of Mass Observation.

Soft cover. Good. 258x300mm, pp 32, self-covered; b&w and some coloured illustrations; staples rusty but a clean, good copy. With a 3pp article by Bertrand Russell "The Next 50 Years". Sadly his predictions were a bit wide of the mark - "Our most eminent living philosopher forsees the possible end of hunger and poverty if only war can be outlawed and science, harnessed to freedom of thought, allowed to be used for the good of mankind instead of for evil." - as, despite his friendship with Keynes, he failed to allow for neoclassical economics and its pernicious political offshoot, neoliberalism. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1927, original edition; large 4to, pp xv, 243, v; 90 figures in the text and with 47 plates; blue cloth gilt, a little rubbed but a good to very good copy, very clean inside. Randall-Maciver was a British archaeologist who later became a citizen of the US. His excavations at Great Zimbabwe were important in showing that the site was built by the Shona peoples. He worked also in north Africa and moved to Italy in 1921 to focus on Etruscan architecture.

This edition is one of twelve copies, this copy being numbered 1. 4to, pp xvi, 316; printed on thick imitation vellum paper and quarter bound with a vellum spine over brown laid paper boards and with a simple printed paper label to the spine, top edge gilt; eight full page coloured plates with tissue guards, a full page steel engraving and another in photogravure and over 100 other illustrations, mainly in the text but some also as full page plates; spine vellum somewhat speckled, corners a little rubbed or bumped, occasional light foxing, very slight cracking between signatures b and B but otherwise firm, clean and in very good condition. Neatly written dedication in ink manuscript on the front end paper to Lady Beatrice Taylor "with affectionate wishes from Pearl Mary Teresa Craigie November 26 1903". Collection of ten odd volumes of this very important quarterly periodical from volume 1, number 3 (Autumn 1963) to volume 11, number 2 (Summer 1973), specifically I/3, II/3, III/3, VI/1, VI/3, VIII/2, VIII/3, X/3, X/4 and XI/2; paper wrappers, very good condition other than on account of some slight rubbing or fraying of spine ends. Each journal, about 206x267mm in size, consists of upwards of 100pp of scholarly illustrated essays, 30 or more full page plates and advertisements from dealers in drawings and prints. Please note that as the total weight is some 4kg there will be a postage supplement necessary on account of the excess weight of the packet or packets, depending on destination.

Hardback. Very Good. MacMillan, New York, 1946; two volumes, quarto, pp xiv, [i], 1-414 and [vi], 306, 33 (being an index and a register of museums and collections). Red buckram, covers gilt, spines and cover edges slightly lightened but otherwise a very good copy. This copiously illustrated work consists of one volume of general explanatory and descriptive text and a second volume of 306 plates with each plate having between one and four images. The content and plates are divided into sections: Architecture, Sculpture, Pottery, Weaving, Metal-Work, Jade and other semiprecious stones, Murals and Manuscripts, Miscellaneous applied arts, and Facets of daily life. The section on woodworking in buildings from the Encyclopédie of Diderot and d'Alembert published initially in Paris between 1751 and 1772. This section, folio, 260x365mm, is well bound for protection in 20th century brown thin card covers finished on the spine in green hessian or similar cloth; tiny worm hole in the extreme lower left margins of the first three or four leaves and with the usual slight browning around the margins but a very good, complete copy with clear, crisp text on 16 numbered pages and 38 full page copper engraved plates (numbered I - XXIV but several with subnumbered plates in the particular subseries). The Encyclopédie, the magnificent Enlightenment undertaking with the grand aim of publishing all the world's knowledge and intended to "change the way people think", appeared between 1751 and 1772 in 28 folio volumes with over 70,000 articles and more… Read More

No Binding. Very Good/Fair. Neither publisher nor date is given and I've so far been unable to trace either but internal evidence suggests mid 1950s to possibly early 1960s - one of the later plans includes an outline of the "Maasvlakte project" (the extension of Europoort and built during the 1960s on land reclaimed from the sea) while an image on the same sheet shows Ossip Zadkine's "De Verwoerte Stad" which was created in 1951-1953 before being erected on site. There is an introduction by the burgemeester of Rotterdam, signed in ink, but the name is not printed and the signature is indecipherable. Large folio, 385x530mm, and consisting of 21 separate sheets (giving 4pp each, folio) folded and loosely gathered in a case of yellow cloth gilt stamped covered boards with flaps, almost in the form of a solander case. Calendar for 1934 published by the German sports paper "Sankt Georg", Berlin; 165x245mm; colour printed cover of a young rider breasting a hill on an exuberantly charging horse apparently conveying his joy in riding in the new Germany of the time, duly reifying Hitler's words quoted on the opening page "Nur durch eigene Arbeit, eigenen Fleiss und eigene Beharrlichkeit können wir emporsteigen". Each page carries one or more black and white photographs generally including horses, sometimes racing, sometimes in triumphal procession, sometimes with young riders, sometimes featuring bucolic or romantically historic scenes, Nazi officers or eminent personages such as Mussolini, Göring or the like and frequently with some supposedly uplifting saying or quotation. That for June 17-20, for instance, quotes Stein "Ich habe nur ein Vaterland, das heist Deutschland!", a sentiment uncomfortably close to far too many political expressions currently… Read More

This is a private printing for friends, number 168 of 250 copies, published on the occasion of Gould's 75th birthday and being excerpts from "Just Representations". NOTE The slimness and light weight of the book means that the postage will be less than the default, subject to destination and form of sending.

Swan Sonnenschein, London, 1910, 6th edition; with a slip tipped in on the title page advising that the publishers are now Allen & Company, London; 8vo, pp half-title, [iii], [1], 2-234; well illustrated in the text with line drawings and other images; original green cloth gilt, bright, tears at both ends of the spine; internally cracked at one point but with the binding still complete and firm; blind embossed ownership address and a few other notes on the front end paper; slight foxing on the prelims but internally clean and overall still a very reasonable copy. The artist and botanist Frederick Edward Hulme was best known as the author of "Familiar Wild Flowers". In this work, however, he looks at the history, origins and relevance of symbolism in a wide range of Christian art.

Robert Stewart, Elgin, 1863, third edition; 8vo, pp 593; lacks covers and spine, binding a little cracked in a couple of places; heavily foxed over a clutch of pages at the start and end, somewhat browned though generally reasonably clean elsewhere; early ownership note (Shepherd, Mossend Castle, Burntisland) on front end paper and partially repeated on the title page. WAF. Dick Lauder, 7th baronet, was a close friend of Sir Walter Scott and this novel, first published in 1827, perhaps reflects that connection. In politics, however, he was quite different being an active Liberal and a strong supporter of the 1832 Reform Bill. This particular edition of the work is illustrated with 11 albumen prints, a process which had been developed in usable form some 13 years earlier and which subsequently became very popular, particularly for photographic visiting cards.
