Description:
The Savannah Fast Freight Lines map, 1884 is printed on the verso of the Bill of Lading dated Dec. 18, 1884 for Douglas Axe Mfg. Co. of East Douglas, Massachusetts (1837-1897)1/ dated in manuscript that appears to read 1884. Business headquarters were in Boston, a shipping hub. The Bill of Lading makes this document original source material for 19th c. shipping to and from the American South. One useful aspect of the map is for the shipper's clients to see the actual travel route of their goods. The Douglas Axe Mfg. Co. goods were to be delivered by steamer to Savannah, Georgia.
The Great Southern Freight Line via the Ocean Steamship Company and Central Railroad of Georgia operated between 1872 and 1951. The line provided a reliable route north for southern products, such as cotton. In this particular instance, the Central Massachusetts based Douglas Axe Mfg. Co. uses the company for shipping to the south twenty four (24) double pick axes weighing 3,115 pounds. . The date on the Bill of Lading c. 1884 was a time of railroad expansion and construction in the south. Perhaps these cast steel axe heads were used by work gangs on railroad building and lumbering. The map shows connection routes between Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee as well as Morgan's Line to Havanna Cuba from Cedar Key, Georgia of the influential Morgan Steamship Company.
Note:1. Davistown Museum of Tools, Art, History The Davistown Museum The Massachusetts Historical Commission report on Douglas identifies the 18th century Hunt brothers, who made axes and brought blacksmith to their shop to meet growing demand, as the founders of manufacturing in Douglas. Axe manufacturing in Douglas expanded into the 19th century with steel and other casting.
