About This Item

Hardback. Fair. Printed for J M Richardson and J Hatchard, London, 1810, fourth edition; 8vo, pp [viii], xxx, 624; full polished tree calf, spine gilt, marbled end papers; front board detached but present, internally cracked on pp 190/191, first two and last two blank leaves browned but otherwise a firm, clean copy; armorial bookplate of Minto Wilson. Goldsmith, c. 1763 to 1846, was Anglo-French and subsequently a notary in London from around 1809. He had earlier held strongly republican views and while in France had undertaken several spying and other activities on behalf of Napoleon including, he claimed, a mission to persuade the Comte de Provence, then head of the French royal family and subsequently Louis XVIII, to renounce his claim to the French throne in return for acceding to the Polish throne. The Comte declined the offer leading Goldsmith to be instructed to kidnap or if necessary to assassinate him. Latterly Goldsmithturned strongly against Napoleon and became also virulently anti-republican and against the French Revolution, publishing several works on these topics and arguing that Napoleon should be brought to trial. This work has also two appendixes on the French state papers and on biographic sketches of the various persons at the court of St Cloud.
