About This Item
Hardcover. Very good. Poems in this volume include "The Dukite Snake", "Western Australia" and The King of the Vasse". Irish-born O'Reilly was dedicated to the Fenian cause, and was transported to Western Australia in 1868 on the last convict ship sent to Australia. He succeeded in escaping to America on the whaling ship "Gazelle" two years later. In the US, he became a prominent literary figure, eventually as editor of the Boston Pilot. He was also instrumental in arranging another rescue ship to Western Australia, "The Bark Catalpa". Many of his poems contain references to Australia. He is considered the first poet associated with Western Australia. Dark green cloth w/ gold kangaroo on front cover and gold stamping on spine; TEG. Original owner's bookplate inside front cover. The covers are a little rubbed and corners slightly bumped. M&Mc #367. Couple of very light ripples on boards.
