About This Item

Boston & London: Shambhala, 1993. First Edition First Printing Stated . Trade Paperback. Good. 7 1/2" X 9 1/4. 109 Pages. A tight, straight trade paperback no marks or stamps with interior text and illustration pages very good. Top front cover has light 3 inch crease and wear to front and back cover corners and edges. The ancient art of I Chuan, one of the traditional internal martial arts of China, is based on Taoist principles of harmony, simplicity, and naturalness. This book presents a program of I Chuan practice consisting of simple physical exercises combined with meditation involving visualization, concentration, and breathing. Aimed at balancing the flow of energy in the body, relaxing the mind, and improving the health, these exercises can be done by men and women of any age, no matter what their lifestyle or state of fitness. The practices include: 12 elementary exercises using gentle, rhythmic movements done from a sitting or standing position, 3 meditation exercises, to be practiced for 3 to 10 minutes each, 7 exercises for attuning oneself with natural energies such as those of the sun, moon, mountains, and water, 7 exercises for specific parts of the body or health issues: heart, knees, back, stomach, sinuses, headache, and sexual energy The system of I Chuan taught by Y. P. Dong was developed early in this century by one of China's great martial artists, Wang Xiang Zhai. A native of Shanghai, Master Dong was a professor of Chinese literature and language before coming to the United States in 1980. In addition to being one of the few teachers of I Chuan in the Western Hemisphere, Master Dong is an accomplished painter and calligrapher. He lives and teaches in New York City.
