About This Item
[Medford, OR]: (Susanne W. Homes), 1920. Ephemera. Fine. A small card promoting the candidacy of one of the first women to successfully run for elected office in Oregon.
This piece includes a half-tone photograph of Susanne W. Homes, a candidate for Jackson County school superintendent. Her slogan, printed along the top of the card, was "Equal Opportunities for Every Child." Homes won the primary over A. J. Hanby, a man whose ads, probably not coincidentally, mentioned his gender: "A man with both Norman and University training" and "A school man of wide experience" (Medford Mail Tribune, 19 May 1920).
Homes won the primary and squeaked by in the general election, winning her first term by 63 votes. She was handily re-elected. Women won the right to vote in Oregon in 1912, and Homes was one of the first women to successfully run for office in the state. The Susanne Homes residence hall at Southern Oregon University is named for her.
Roughly 3-1/2 by 2 inches. Printed on one side (recto) only. A fine example but for a bit of irregular darkening to the verso (back).
