London: John Warren, 1821-2. First edition. Hardback. Fair. 9.5" by 6". None. A first edition of William Hazlitt's important collection of essays covering art, philosophy and literature. An important essay collection, demonstrating the writer's skill at penning familiar essays, which cover his opinions, experiences and ideas spanning literature, art and philosophy amongst many other things. Written by William Hazlitt (1778-1830), an English essayist, artist, art and literary critic and social commentator highly regarded as being on the greatest critics and essayists in the English language alongside the likes of Samuel Johnson.A first edition of this work, with volume I released in 1821 and the second volume following a year later.Complete in two volumes.With four pages of publisher's advertisements to the front of volume I. In the original paper covered boards. Externally rather worn, particularly to the first volume, which has loss to the spine and boards; front board is loose and rear board is strained. Both volumes are bumped to the extremities and wear to the spine. Ownership inscription to the title page of volume II. Internally, binding is tender; volume I has ten loose leaves at the start, including the title page. Pages are generally bright and clean with just the odd spot. Fair
