Allen & Unwin, London, 1950, first edition; 8vo, pp vii, 197; original burgundy cloth, spine gilt, some slight damp marking on the front and back covers, dustwrapper slightly torn at the foot of the spine but generally a very good copy. Barbara Wootton, later becoming Baroness Wootton in 1958 as one of the first four life peers appointed, was a utilitarian in philosophical outlook and a conscientious objector, as was her husband, during WWII. She became a Professor at Bedford College, London University and wrote several works, some contentious, on sociology and criminology.
