- Hardcover
Cassell & Company Limited, London, 1884. Second Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition. Book Frontispiece map plate printed in gray and three other colors (red, brown and blue). Second edition issue points (besides the fact it is stated to be the Second Edition on the title page) include: "dead man's chest" uncapitalized on pages 2 and 7, "rain" for "vain" in the last line of page 40, the "a" is missing from the phrase "at a glance" at the break between lines 5/6 on page 63, "worse" for "worst" in line 3 of page 197, the period is missing following "opportunity" in line 20 of page 178, and "Treasure Island" is listed as having 304 pages on page 4 of the publisher's advertisements. Includes 8 pages of advertisements dated with the code "5R-12.83" with the last two leaves (pp. 5/6 & 7/8) still uncut. Additional pictures available upon inquiry Size: 7.5"-8" - Small Octavo (Sm. 8vo). 292 pages. Item Type: Book. The text block is bright and unmarked, except for three small pencil marks at the bottom margin of the last page of the advertisements. The book is bound in the original green silk with the title on the spine in bright gilt in the same format as the First Edition. Very uncommon in the original cloth. The top corners remain sharp with slight wear at the tips. The bottom corners have been bumped (the front more than the rear) and show wear, but are not worn through. There is a slight lean to the book. The front hinge is shaken, mainly because the front paste down has torn revealing the super (or mull) underneath. The rear hinge is strong. The binding is broken (exposing the super, but still holding) at the beginning and end of signature F. The tissue between the frontispiece and title page is intact. There is some small scattered foxing, mainly carrying over into the outside margins from the page edges, but the pages are mainly clean. There is a thumbprint at the top corner of p. 121 and p. 79 is dog-eared. Previous owner's name written with fountain pen at the top edge of the front paste down and verso of the front free end paper. Edges show some foxing, though it is hard to see until the pages are opened. Quantity Available: 1. A rare and beautiful copy of Orthodox Evangelion with luxury purple velvet binding with brass clasps and corner and center ornaments. Woodcut printed text and hand-colored illustrations. The book contains multiple hand inscriptions that are only partially legible. The pencil inscription on the front flyleaf contains references to Sarajevo, Bosnia, and Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, as well as the years: 1911 and 1914. It is possible that the text in some way refers to the Bosnian crisis which served as a prelude to WWI. But, since we have not been able to translate the entire text, we cannot be certain of the context. In the Romanian language, in old Cyrillic script.Pp. /6/ + 344 (Cyrillic numeration); 4 hand colored illustrations, vignettes; initials.Size: 31.2 x 21 cm.Binding: Luxury purple velvet binding with two brass clasps and brass decorations on the covers. Roma: Generoso Salomone, 1760. Hardcover. Very good +. 12mo, 2 parts in one volume, 418pp., plus eighteen folding plates, four of which are signed in plate by Piranesi. A very nice unrestored copy in a contemporary full vellum binding, with no repairs or sophistications; very good or better. Vellum evenly soiled, inked title to spine still bold, crisp, tight, and clean, with an old amrginal dampstain at the base of the gutter, affecting many pages, but not approaching any text. The folding plates are in excellent condition. Two stately bookplates on the front endpapers. A charming guidebook to Rome, which went through many editions. Chronologically, this is the second of several editions to include engravings by Piranesi. The book appears infrequently in commerce, but when it does, it is often lacking at least one plate; this copy is complete.
