About This Item
London: John Murray, 1901. First edition. Cloth. Good. 8" by 5.5". None. A first edition of Anthony Hope's novel centred around legitimacy and family secrets. A first edition of Anthony Hope's novel. Predominantly remembered for his late nineteenth century works The Prisoner of Zenda and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau, Hope spawned a genre of known as Ruritanian Romance in which the ruling classes embarked on swashbuckling adventures in fictional countries. In this novel, an elderly gentleman editing a memoir discovers that Harry Tristram may be an illegitimate child. Prior owner's pencil inscription to the front pastedown, 'R. Chamberlain'. In the publisher's original green cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, more so to the spine which is discoloured. The spine is missing a little cloth to the head and at the rear joint. There is a small tear in the cloth at the rear joint to the tail, which is bumped. A little bumped to the extremities. The front hinge is starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound, with light to moderate foxing throughout. Good
